For my LINK project, I worked with the Buffalo Woman Ranch labyrinth. A labyrinth is a winding path-like structure that is meant for meditation, prayer, and spiritual or internal change. It’s a way to think, to process, and to set goals for yourself or in your life. The labyrinth at the Ranch was built as a way for clients to go through alongside a horse and to process their emotions after their experience. I helped maintain the labyrinth by fixing the fence and cleaning it from horse manure (from when the horses broke into it, thus the fixing of the fence!). I also registered the labyrinth for the World Labyrinth Day on the Labyrinth Society website, which means that it is now an official labyrinth site to walk on the World Labyrinth Day, which is a day for all people to walk or participate in a labyrinth. It’s on Saturday, May 7, at 1 pm. However, for the most part my project was really about instructing people through the labyrinth. This consisted of giving them an introduction to what labyrinths are and having them set an intention in their heart before they walk. An intention can be about anything; as I mentioned earlier, walking through a labyrinth can be about meditation, prayer, change, etc. Having the person set an intention gets them into a meditative, focused, and calm mindset. At the start and end of the labyrinth, there is an altar that can be used to kneel next to. After giving them the introduction, they would walk it themselves. I walked the labyrinth several times myself, and experienced the beauty and sacredness of the process. The combination of a clear mind, being completely present and in the moment, and a rhythmic, slow, physical movement gave me such a clear, beautiful feeling. It was about being in the moment and yet not inside your own mind.
